Magnetic Distractor

Joint distraction is an appealing treatment option for patients with joint arthritis, which subsequently causes pain relief; however, this method has not yet been developed. We are developing a new method for treating CMC1 joint osteoarthritis.

Here, we plan to use a continuous distraction force on both sides of the joint. To create the distraction, we have designed a pair of implants, each consisting of a magnet imbedded in a neutral capsule being placed in the trapezoid and first metacarpal bones. Similar poles of the magnets will be placed in front of each other, and the resultant continuous repulsive force will distract the joint, relieve patient’s pain and might even cause degrees of cartilage repair.
